But what actually is a root canal?![]()

Here's the simplest way to think about it:![]()

Your tooth isn't completely solid. Inside it is soft tissue called the pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels. If that tissue becomes inflamed or infected because of deep decay, a crack, trauma or other damage, the problem is now inside the tooth. That's where root canal treatment comes in.![]()

A root canal isn't about taking your tooth out. When the tooth can be saved, it's actually about treating the inside so your natural tooth can stay.![]()

Of course, every tooth is different, and whether root canal treatment is appropriate depends on what's actually happening with that tooth.![]()
