Scaling and Polishing Aftercare
Scaling and polishing help remove plaque, tartar, and stains, keeping your gums and teeth healthy. Some mild side effects are normal, but with proper care, your mouth will feel fresh and clean.

Floss daily and gently between teeth to prevent plaque build up. |
Do not skip flossing if you see bleeding gums. Continue to floss. |

Use desensitising toothpaste if teeth feel sensitive. |
Do not ignore persistent sensitivity, pain, or swelling. |

Stay hydrated and maintain good oral hygiene. |
Do not smoke or use tobacco products (slows healing; stains teeth). |

Return for your regular check-ups as indicated by your dentist/ hygienist. |
What To Expect
- Mild sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods for a few days.
- Slight gum bleeding when brushing or flossing, which should improve as gums heal.
- Gums may feel tender or slightly sore for a short period.
Diet
- Stick to soft foods on the first day if your gums feel sore.
- Avoid very hot, cold, or spicy foods if sensitivity is present.
- Limit coffee, tea, wine, and coloured foods for 24–48 hours to reduce staining.
- Drink plenty of water to keep the mouth clean and hydrated.
Oral Hygiene
- Brush twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush.
- Floss daily.
- Use fluoride toothpaste to strengthen enamel.
- Avoid aggressive brushing.
Sensitivity
- Normal for up to a few days.
- Use desensitising toothpaste for sensitive teeth (e.g. Sensodyne; Colgate Pro-Relief).
- Avoid very cold foods or drinks until symptoms subside.
⚠ When to Call Us Immediately
Call our clinic if you experience:
- Severe or persistent bleeding that does not stop after 24 hours.
- Swelling, severe pain, or pus around gums.
- Prolonged sensitivity that worsens instead of improving.
