Over the last 50 years, materials used to restore decayed teeth have advanced.
Composites or tooth-coloured fillings are the material of choice for many patients today. Composites are filling materials designed to match the colour of your teeth and blend in with your tooth enamel.
Composite is the perfect choice when the cavity is in a visible area, such as on the front teeth or at the gum line. Even cavities on molars can be restored with composites if the cavity is small to moderate in size. The two main ingredients are plastic resin and a filler of finely ground glass-like particles.
Although composite resin fillings are preferred for cosmetic reasons, if a cavity is too large, your dentist may recommend a different restorative material, for example zirconia based porcelain inlays or onlays.
Like all fillings, composite fillings, over time, may need replacing. Schedule regular dental check-ups in order to detect any problems early.
